Minnesota Firearm Laws

If you’re considering purchasing a firearm in these troubled times, you are not alone. Gun sales have surged through the roof in recent months, far higher than even industry analysts had predicted. In order to select a firearm that best suits your needs, it is important to understand not only the operation and potential application, but also the laws concerning whatever you may be interested in.
Some key points to be aware of * :
Standard firearms and ammunition: No restrictions on possession (handgun and assault weapon sales require permit)
Suppressors: Lawful per federal law compliance
Firearm law uniformity: State preemption law, meaning that firearm laws are uniform throughout the state (unlike some states that have different laws in different cities or jurisdictions)
Right of Self-Defense: No castle doctrine, duty to retreat in public areas (one cannot use deadly force in self-defense when it is possible to retreat from a threatening situation to a place of safety)
Licensed concealed carry: Licenses issued on a “shall issue” basis (issuance of a permit to carry is not dependent upon the discretion of law enforcement – if the applicant satisfies all required criteria that are mandated by law, the applicant must be issued a license)
Permit to Carry Requirements: Must be at least 21 years of age, must not be prohibited from possessing a firearm under Minnesota Statute 624.714, must be a resident of the county from which you are requesting a permit, and must provide certificate of completed authorized firearms training
Weapons allowed for licensed carry: Limited to handguns only
Duty to notify LEO or permit status: Upon demand of police officer (unlike some states which require the permitee to volunteer this information upon being approached by an officer)
