A handgun is a firearm designed to be held and fired using either one or both hands. This characteristic differentiates handguns from long guns such as rifles and shotguns, which are usually deployed and operated from the shoulder. Primary handgun classifications are the “revolver” and “pistol”, the latter of which includes single-shot pistols, semi-automatic pistols and machine pistols.

Although the words "pistol" and "handgun" are often used somewhat synonymously, firearm experts make a technical distinction in that the term "pistol" specifically refers to a handgun having a single chamber integral with the barrel. This contrasts from the other main type of handgun, the “revolver”, which has a revolving cylinder containing multiple chambers. As such, “handgun” is generally considered the parent category of most non long-gun firearms.

Handheld firearms were first created in China where gunpowder was initially developed. They were, in essence, hand cannons, although they were not fired directly from the hand, but rather from the end of a long handle. By the 14th century, this design existed in Europe as well. As early as the 15th century, the first handheld firearms that would be called "pistols" were created, and by the 18th century, this became part of the lexicon in reference to such handheld firearms. Followed on by various revolver designs in the 19th century, it was not until the mid-twentieth century that differential usage of the words “pistol" and "revolver" evolved, and the term "handgun" became prevalent.
